On Sunday 5th October 18 players, coaches and supporters travelled to Cockermouth RUFC to take part in the annual Cumbria Rugby Union under 10`s and under 12`s festival.
9 teams from all over Cumbria made up the under 12 group and were placed into three groups. Each team would play two games of 14 minutes and the winners of each group would go forward into the next stage.
In Penrith`s group were teams from Wigton and Carlisle. In the first game Carlisle ran out the winners against Wigton 2 tries to nil.
Penrith then took to the field against Wigton who kicked off. Penrith made a bit of a scrappy start resulting in Wigton regaining possession. A solid tackle by Oliver Bibby put the ball back in Penrith hands and Tom Hill made a run forward deep into Wigton territory. Training paid off as the Penrith backs spread across the field and the ball was moved down the line through solid hands until it reached Liam Scott out on the far side in space to cross the try line and score. Wigton fought back before halftime without success.
The score line remained unchanged in the second half with Penrith playing it tight, Jacob Batey worked hard and made some good tackles. Penrith 1 Wigton 0
Penrith`s second game was against Carlisle and having played and losing to them only a week earlier Penrith were keen to win. Penrith got off to a slow start with Declan Parkinson being penalised for a high tackle, however Penrith soon won the ball back and put together a series of excellent passes and running allowing Jacob Batey to score.
The flow of the game was interrupted regularly by sound of the refs whistle and neither side could capitalise when in possession of the ball.
In the second half Carlisle came out the stronger team scoring two tries leaving a final score of Penrith 1 Carlisle 2.
This meant Penrith could not progress any further in the festival so after a quick lunch a final friendly game was played against Cockermouth, allowing all the boys that had travelled some extra game time.
Tries were scored by Jacob Batey, Bailey Potts, Dylan Aitken, Luke Coggins and Harry Chambers. Jonny Hope was team Captain for the day and Spencer Lancaster was named man of the match. All the boys were given a packed lunch and awarded medals for taking part in the festival. Thank you to Cumbria RFU for organising the event and Cockermouth rugby club for hosting it.
