Sunday 21st November saw 17 members of the Penrith under 12 squad travel to Davidson Park Keswick to play against the newly formed Keswick under 12 team. As Keswick were four players short of the required number a selection of Penrith players made up their numbers, this meant every player had maximum game time.
Keswick kicked off and the ball was gathered by Luke Coggins and Penrith began to move the ball forward with some excellent passing. They got to within 10 metres of the try line when they were awarded a scrum. As the ball came out of the back of the scrum Tom hill playing at 8 picked the ball up and went for the line scoring Penrith`s first try.
Penrith`s forwards then had a chance to shine setting up some fine rolling mauls moving the ball steadily up the pitch, giving Luke Coggins the chance to run forward to within 5 metres of the line before being tackled. The ball emerged safely from the scrum and was passed down the line until it reached Oliver Bibby who spotted the gap and touched down for Penrith`s second.
Connor Robinson scored a third before Keswick started counter attacking and Putting Penrith under pressure. Spencer Lancaster was forced to kick and Robinson was first to the ball and made it to within 5 metres of the line before being brought down. Penrith`s strength in the rucks proved pivotal and they retained possession to allow Lancaster to score Penrith`s fourth.
Just before the end of the period good passing down the line saw the ball reach Liam Scott`s hands who made a fine run down the far side before he was tackled. The ball stayed with Penrith and allowed Lancaster to score his second and Penrith`s fifth.
The second period saw four different Penrith players don a Keswick shirt and the game continue with Keswick playing much better, having weathered the storm of the first period.
To lighten the mood there then came a clip straight out of `You`ve been framed` as Adam Wilson emerged from a maul holding the ball but with his shirt pulled over his head, totally blind and not a clue as to which direction he was supposed to go. His blushes were spared as he was relieved of the ball and the game continued.
Shortly afterwards Thomas Wear crashed over the line to score number 6.
Harry Chambers guesting for Keswick then put an excellent ball into touch 10 metres from the line. Keswick won the line out and scored their first, well deserved try.
Tom Hill then scored his second and Penrith`s seventh. Dylan Aitken caught the next kick off really well keeping the ball alive and allowing Lancaster to score his third.
Just before the end of the period Sam Nelson made good ground before offloading cleanly to Aitken who passed to Bibby, but who was tackled, retaining possession he fed the ball to Llewelyn Giggs who crossed the line, the Penrith supporters held their breath for a moment as it looked like Giggs had forgotten to ground the ball for the try, but he was only making for the centre.
For the last period Keswick were bolstered by a couple of the Penrith big hitters, to some consternation from the rest of the team. This saw a shift in the number of rucks Keswick began to win and it wasn’t long before they scored two tries, interrupted only by a fine try scored by Dylan Aitken.
Connor Robinson completed proceedings by scoring a final try for Penrith and earning himself `Man of the Match`.
