One way traffic at Cockermouth

Sunday 7th December 2014
Under12`s Penrith 13 v Cockermouth 2
Team:- Jacob Batey, Oliver Bibby, Harry Chambers, Luke Coggins (man of the Match) Declan Devaney, Tom Hill, Jonny Hope, Spencer Lancaster, Sam Nelson, Connor Robinson, Thomas Wear (capt), Adam Wilson.
A depleted Penrith under 12`s rugby team travelled to Cockermouth on a very wintery Sunday morning. With a stiff wind blowing and snow in the air, keeping warm especially hands was the order of the day.
Hosts Cockermouth kicked off and Penrith very quickly made their intentions clear with a run forward by the backs, firstly Jacob Batey drawing defenders in before passing to Oliver Bibby who offloaded to Spencer Lancaster to score.
Penrith forwards kept up the momentum tying Cockermouth down and the pressure was rewarded when Adam Wilson touched down for try number 2.
Sam Nelson playing on the wing made a good run forward before knocking on and Cockermouth seized their chance to charge forward and score.
Penrith countered and only some fine tackling by their hosts kept them at bay. A kick to touch by Lancaster moved the ball to within 15 metres of the line. Penrith won the lineout and put in a strong driving maul feeding the ball out to Lancaster to score his second.
Excellent passing by the backs allowed Connor Robinson to score making it 4 tries to 1 at the end of the first period.
The second period was all one way traffic by Penrith. Batey scored twice, the second when he caught the ball from kick off and ran almost the complete length of the pitch avoiding defenders to touch down.
Not to be outdone Tom Hill was fed the ball from kick off and repeated the same run to score.
Cockermouth attempted to rally but Penrith scored four more before the end of the second period, Two by Bibby, one by Declan Devaney and one by man of the match Luke Coggins. The score at the end of the second period was Penrith 11 tries Cockermouth 1.
The third period saw Penrith become a bit giddy with success and the referee needed to penalise them several times for infringements. Cockermouth capitalised on the possession and scored a well-deserved try. Having realised the error of their ways Penrith settled again allowing Coggins and Lancaster to score.
Cockermouth weren’t for throwing the towel in and mounted some ferocious attacks on the Penrith line but were kept out by stout defensive teamwork.
Final score:- Penrith 13 tries Cockermouth 2 Tries
