Penrith U12`s travel to Carlisle. Win against Percy Park loose to Barnard Castle and Draw with Carlisle

Sunday 11th January 2015
U12`s Penrith v Percy Park, Barnard Castle and Carlisle.
Team:- Dylan Aitken, Jacob Batey, Oliver Bibby (Capt), Harry Chambers, Luke Coggins,, Declan Devaney, , Llewelyn Giggs , Tom Hill, Elliot Judge, Spencer Lancaster, Declan Parkinson, Bailey Potts, Connor Robinson, Liam Scott, Mathew Thompson, Andy Walsh, Thomas Wear ,Adam Wilson.
On a very windy and cold Sunday morning Penrith under 12`s travelled up the road to Carlisle. It was going to be a busy morning as Percy Park and Barnard Castle had also made the trip.
Two pitches had been set out on playing fields opposite the Richard Rose Academy, and after a quick warm up play got under way.
With three games to play each it was decided to play shorter than usual games of 10 minutes each way.
As Carlisle took on Barnard Castle, Penrith took to the field against Percy Park.
Percy Park kicked off and the ball was gathered by Bailey Potts who ran forward into contact. He was deemed by the ref to have knocked on and the first scrum went to Percy Park.
Penrith started the game brimming with confidence and an energy which wasn’t matched by their opponents. Consequently the referee judged some of their tackling to be `over enthusiastic` for which they were penalised. Percy Park capitalised on this and opened the scoring.
Just before half time Jacob Batey was substituted by Elliot Judge.
The second half saw a much more settled Penrith side impose their style of play on their opponents. Keeping possession and moving the ball around gave Connor Robinson the space to avoid defenders for a trade mark jinking run to score Penrith`s first try.
Realising the final whistle wasn’t far away Penrith threw their all into the final few minutes pressurising the try line and their persistence paid off when a handling error by Percy Park left a loose ball bouncing free , Robinson as always reading the game one step ahead of the opposition pounced on it and scored the winning try.
Penrith 2 tries Percy Park 1 try.
Penrith`s second game of the morning was against Barnard Castle who had just beaten Carlisle. Despite some excellent tackling by Penrith it wasn’t enough to close Barny down. They have a couple of strong runners in the team, who when they break are almost uncatchable. They also have the ability to move the ball in both directions along the back line until they are in a position to exploit opposition weaknesses and break through. So with Penrith on the back foot and Barny playing a better game it wasn’t long before they scored. With history repeating itself, so it was today as they scored three tries in both halves and denying Penrith any chance of scoring.
Penrith 0 Barnard Castle 6.
And so onto the main event of the morning, Penrith kicked off to Carlisle and gave chase to give an early line out in their favour. Carlisle countered and the ball ended up with Marcus Tiffin who exploited weaknesses in the Penrith defence to break free and score.
Penrith bounced straight back and maintaining discipline began moving the ball across field making forward progress. Keeping tight possession gave Robinson the chance to forage forward avoiding defenders and equalise.
Both teams were evenly matched and the game swung back and forth. And it wasn’t until just before half time that things changed, with Penrith pressing forward a pass was cleverly intercepted giving Carlisle the chance to catch Penrith on the hop and score their second just before half time.
The second half saw both teams equally determined to play good attacking rugby. Penrith looked the more cohesive team, but it was Carlisle who scored their third, from a scrum.
Was the game going to move out of Penrith`s reach? Not today the boys dug in and dug deep. They began to dominate in the scrums with Tom Hill at 8 either closing down their scrum half limiting their ability to clear the ball or picking up and going making good forward progress. Penrith followed up keeping possession with solid rucking and set up some fine driving mauls with Adam Wilson at their centre. Carlisle could do little to counter the momentum of the Penrith pack and when the ball was released it was Elliot Judge who took possession and made the score.
So 3-2 to Carlisle, and with only minutes to play, the Carlisle supporters must have wondered if their team could hold on to their lead.
You could sense Penrith were the dominant team now and they immediately put Carlisle under pressure driving forward towards the try line .And so it was that the final try of the morning went to Penrith Captain Oliver Bibby.
A draw then at three tries a piece. Who knows what difference to the score an extra couple of minutes would have made (how many teams have said that?) But here’s to the next match.
Penrith 3 Carlisle 3
