Penrith hosted Egremont with both teams fielding combined U12s and U11s for three 15 min periods. Egremont always have well drilled teams and perhaps underestimated Penrith who are improving as their players mature and develop their rugby skills. The first 15 minute session saw some excellent handling, rucking and mauls and defensive displays by both teams. Neither team recorded any points in the first period, a reflection of how well matched the teams were. The second period saw Penrith use the squad rotation system that provides all players match experience. Egremont ran in five tries in the second period, four of which were converted, however Penrith demonstrated determination and great character. The final 15 minute period saw Penrith field the same team that played in the first period and Penrith’s Joe Connell weaved excellently through the disciplined Egremont defence to chalk up Penrith’s first points. Connell followed up his try with a well taken conversion. Egremont and Penrith switched admirably between defence and attack in with Egremont running in a late try, however the conversion was missed by Egremont. Both teams won one a period each with the remaining period seeing a draw. An excellent result from Penrith who lost the corresponding fixture last season 105-0.
