Tough trip up into the Borders

Our U14 girls took the long drive North across into the sunny Scottish Borders to take on the lasses from Biggar. A game which we knew would prove a test from previous encounters.

The (in both teams opinion) significant differences between SRU and RFU age grade rules meant slight adaptions of, and to, the rules on the day for both sides - the result being a game that was to slightly favour the home side. Namely, one person in the ruck was somewhat of a confusion and backwards step for the PRUGC girls. Smaller 3 person scrums and lineouts are something we have also left behind South of the Border at U14.

This is not to say the changes affected the overall result - Biggar are a well marshalled group with good basics and some standout speedy skilled individuals.

After a fitting 1 minutes applause for the passing of local legend Doddie Weir, the game was started, and immediately the journey up seemed to still be in the legs of Penrith - losing the first half by conceding 6 tries, with the only response a single try by Paige.

Towards the end of the half some better spells of possession were maintained. This, and some tough soul-seeking behind the posts seemed to galvanise PRUFC and at the start of the second half the tables turned with multiple back to back tries from Penrith, to bring the score within 2 tries. A late comeback from Biggar took the result out to 11-6 in the end; the score line perhaps slightly flattering the home side at times. If not for some individual efforts from Biggar and PRUFC mistakes, the result may have been closer in the end. In any event we look forward to the return game at Winter Park under 'our' rules.

Erin was voted PRUFC player of the day by her teammates. Bianca ably captained the side on a day which was tough at times.

Particular mention must be made of our 3 'newer' players - Katie, Abbie and Ellie - all had their best games to date - really getting stuck in and coming off smiling despite it being one of our toughest encounters of the season so far. Well done to those stepping up to attempt kicking at goal (new to our matches this season), Emilia hitting 3/4 attempts.

Thank you to Biggar for hosting us (much confusion caused by Lorne sausage afterwards amongst the PRUFC girls) and we look forward to seeing you again after Christmas.

Thank you to those parents that drove up and helped with transporting the team.
