More progress for girls at Kirkby Lonsdale festival on Sunday when they drew 1 - 1 v Keswick /Kendal combined squad then straight after winning 4-3 against a Barbarians team made up from K Lonsdale/Carlisle/Garstang players.

This weeks format was 15 a side on a full pitch for the first time!
In the first match of 3 x 7 min periods against a Keswick/Kendal squad despite the extra space of the full pitch the 2 defences were excellent so little progress was made. Some excellent off loads and continuity in attack and they used the kick option to good effect to make ground.
Lily T-P leading the press defence. The team had highlighted ruck/tackle area from previous weeks game and they were much more effective this week led by Katie Smith.
In the 2nd period Hazel Harrison put in a crucial early tackle to halt a powerful ball carrier through the middle and Emily Hetherington followed up with a fine cover tackle wide out. Chloe Brown was next to impress with a strong tackle forcing a turnover. After more good interpassing and support they finally made it to the opposition try line before Keswick broke away for Rebecca Newby to chase back for a try saving tackle followed by some determined defence to keep the scoreline 0-0.
Into the 3rd period a fine run from Penny Robinson and support from Lily T-P gained ground. Charlotte Harnwell long pass out left to Penny who combined with Maisy Egglestone to give winger Lily T-P space and she flew down the touchline for a glorious try in the corner. Keswick responded and it was all out defence with Maisy, Chloe, Hazel and Rebecca tackling well. they were falling foul of the referee and from 2 tap penalties the smallest player Charlotte took on the powerful ball carriers with brave tackles. Eventually the pressure and penalties told with the ball moved wide to their speedy winger to score for a draw which such a well contested game deserved - credit to both teams.
2nd Match V Lakeland Barbarians – Win 4-3
Try scorers – Lili T-P, Emily, Katie, Penny.
The fresh Barbarians team were quickly on the attack and despite some strong defence the scored with from a strong individual run. Hazel gained good ground and the ball was moved wide to Rebecca with a chance to score but a good tackle halted the attack.
Amber Beaty turned over the ball at the breakdown for Jess Graham to feed wide to Emily who was clear to run in from half way to make it 1-1.
The 2nd period tarted well with Pippa Shay making a good 30m run, Evie Holme was prominent with a turnover and fine catching in full back role. Sofia was next to show her power, her run and fine off load gave Katie a chance for a determined run to reach and score. The girls were moving the ball well although the line was too flat. Into the last session the spirit was good keeping each going as fatigue was building. Lily Bell on her debut made a fine mazy cross field run to neatly pass to Lili T-P who again ran well to score from 30m for a 3-1 lead.
The Barbarians had some fine individual players including Garstang 13 who sped in for 2 tries to make it 3-3.
The team had to dig deep into their energy reserves, Maisy long kick off and good chase by Evie put them on the attack and Leila Robinson carried strongly through the defence. From a penalty the last play of the game Amber placed a kick perfectly in front of the posts, Leila Robinson chased and the ball came to Penny to score for a 4-3 win. Another excellent game where the girls character and stamina was fully tested.
