An excellent first half performance with a 10-0 lead from tries by Evie Holme and Lily Salmon before fading in the 2nd half against a resurgent Keswick who ran in 6 tries for a 30-10 win.
Penrith travelled looking forward to meeting up with their friends from Keswick and enjoyed an excellent game played in great spirit. Due to various reasons Penrith only had 13 players so played 13 a side which proved to be a factor as the game progressed with the home squad being 18.
Penrith started very well, the work on defence in training paid off as they put Keswick under alot of pressure and also prevented any tries with some fantastic tackles. Capt Lili Thompson- Parry, Sofia Hellevik, Charlotte Harnwell and Evie Holme leading the way.
From a scrum (5 player scrum with just hookers contesting) Penrith made ground with half backs Charlotte and Amber Beaty moving the ball wide with Leila Robinson held up over the line after a strong run. Another attack saw the improving Lily Salmon make a break before being tackled into touch. Defensive pressure led to a turnover at the tackle by Evie , Charlotte and Leila drove on before Evie finished off for the try.
Keswick came back with their dangerous runners a superb 1 on 1 tackle by Eimhear McGrath saved a try.
The 2nd try came from a scrum 30 m out, Amber looping Evie in the centres to Leila who made a strong run to the line before popping the ball to Lily Salmon in support to score.
A big plus with some experienced players missing was the noticeable contribution of the less experienced players- Jessica Hodgson running strongly and retaining possession, Maebh McGrath and Lily Bell increasingly involved in handling and tackling.
Back came Keswick and they dominated territory but Penrith defence held firm causing errors before giving the ball back and more pressure. A certain Keswick score saw Charlotte hold up the ball carrier over the line for a goal line drop out which Amber made good distance on to ease the pressure before a fine 2 player cover tackle by Eimhear and Leila prevented a try in the corner and a 10-0 lead at half time.
Keswick with less game time so far this season were growing into the game and responded superbly after half time- they were the team with the more aggressive defence as Penrith dropped off their intensity.
Penrith made some breaks from Katie Smith, Lily Salmon and Evie but generally were on the back foot. Katie and Matilda McTear prevented a try with strong tackles. Despite some excellent turnovers by Katie and fine tackling throughout the team possession was often given up cheaply with handling errors due to players not working hard to realign and errors at the set piece.
Kicking was tried, the right option but Ambers execution not the best giving Keswick another opportunity which they took to score. Evie had to leave the field for a blood injury before returning then suffering an ankle injury so it was 12 a side.
Keswick added some fine tries from individual breaks to win 30-10.
For Penrith this was good preparation for the National Cup game this Sunday at Home to West Park Leeds 2pm KO. A good 50 min work out for all the players and lots to work on at training.
