SEASON ENDS WITH A WIN

Penrith completed their season with their twice postponed game at Blackburn. With nothing at stake for either side it was "end of season" fayre and although it was a scrappy affair with there were some decent bits of play although most of what was on show was pretty forgettable. Penrith however, after two disappointing defeats in their previous games were happy to come away with a win to go into the close season.

Penrith started by opening up the play at every opportunity and were perhaps guilty of trying to play too much rugby in their own 22. They were caught out after only five minutes, they were on the attach and had a kick and chase into the home 22 which the full back ran back too easily. Two phases later they had scored in the corner, an excellent conversion with the aid of a strong wind gave the home side a seven point lead which they increased to ten points shortly afterwards with a long range penalty from beyond the 10m line. This all by a side that had conceded seven tries and 45 points at Winters Park just three weeks earlier.

Penrith did reply with a Mike Fearon penalty well struck into the wind after Blackburn gave away a number of penalties in their attempts to slow the game. Despite that the home side had the upper hand and Penrith were missing the services of Arran Sullivan in the front row and as a result were under the cosh at the set scrums. The home side went further in front after a series of three 5m scrums. The first one was reset, Penrith were penalised at the second and the home side unsurprisingly opted for a third scrummage from which they scored a pushover try.

Penrith were now 15-3 down and with Blackburn still in the ascendancy the afternoon looked as if it could go horribly wrong. They survived one or two more scares before getting into the game in the last play of the first half. It started with the home side attempting a penalty from inside their own half, although well struck and with the wind behind it, it dropped just short. Craig Price fielded the towering kick and released Kris Bratton, he beat the initial chasers and the run was continued by Josh Dowson and then James Hogg and got Penrith rare field position. They were then awarded a penalty that Matt Allinson kicked to the corner.

The Cumbrian forwards won the lineout but made no progress against the larger home pack and the ball was moved cross field, progress was made up the right hand touchline and when the ball came back left it was first driven in by Ryan Johnson and then Allinson found fullback Ryan Egerton with a long pass. With men outside him the cover was corner flagging and he picked his way through them to make the line.

The conversion went wide but Penrith were within a score at the break with the elements in their favour in the second half. Allinson put them into immediate effect when the second half restart went long, the attempted clearance kick was sliced and Penrith had a lineout on the 22. The lineout ball was secured and play moved from right to left as the visitors pounded the home line, play was concentrated on the left hand touchline and when the ball came back right Bratton cut a line off Allinson and went in under the posts, Fearon's conversion levelled the scores.

Man of the match Dowson manufactured the score to put his side in front, he emerged from broken play on the halfway line, ran up the right touchline breaking three tackles before drawing the final man and playing the ball out of contact to Johnson in support on his inside who scored under the posts. Fearon's conversion was an easy one and it looked at that stage as if the visitors might run riot but the home side rallied. Poor first up tackling when their No8 broke from a scum just into the Penrith half saw them score a well worked try in the corner, the conversion was wide and Penrith's advantage was down to just two points.

Jamie McNaughton was back after injury and came off the bench at half time, he had gone close with a mazy run earlier but set up the deciding score with ten minutes to go. Penrith won turnover ball on half way and quickly moved it, Hogg found himself at outside centre and didn't hesitate in setting McNaughton away. He was faced with the hooker who he rounded with ease and then sped into the 22, he looked to beat the final defender and was brought down but managed to feed the ball back inside and as it rolled end over end it was gathered up by Dan Morgan in support who jogged in for the easiest of scores.

As the game drew to a scrappy conclusion either side could have added to their tally but it ended with reasonably comfortable win in for a Penrith side that at one stage looked as if they might have capitulated as they had at Leigh a fortnight before.
