Carlisle kicks scored by their fly half, Jason Israel
Penrith travelled to Silloth for their away game with Carlisle as their Warwick Road ground is unfit following the flooding. They were met with a difficult swirling Silloth wind but underfoot conditions were perfect which would suit the fleet of foot Penrith backs.
This was not one of David Preston's men's better performances but he was more than happy with the bonus point win. Penrith got a decent start with a Mike Fearon try which brings his tally to 11 for the season. He followed up his own chip and chase to gather the ball, step the last defender and scoot in for the try.
That was on quarter of an hour and the home side had then had the better of the rest of the half, they saw plenty of the ball and managed eventually to turn pressure into points with a penalty goal, Fearon got one back for his side before Carlisle struck another on the stroke of half time to leave Penrith with only a two point advantage at the break.
Penrith started the second period strongly going through the phases and scored again when a clearance kick was fielded by Ryan Egerton. He ran the ball back and kicked ahead, the ball was secured and quick passing by Paul Newton, Fearon and Matt Allinson got the ball to Kris Bratton. He burst through two tackles on his own 10m line, then beat the full back on the outside to score an outstanding individual try in the corner.
Carlisle came back again dominating possession and this time earned themselves a try from an attacking 5m lineout. Harlan Corrie then replied for Penrith, Ryan Johnson won the ball at the tail of the lineout and slipped it to Corrie who ran over a couple of backs before forcing his way over the line.
Penrith then scored a fourth try following a break from No8 by James Hogg, after making good ground he passed to Scott Lancaster who committed most of the cover before playing a clever pass out of the back door to pacey winger Jamie McNaughton who skipped round the last defender to score.
At 7-13 up going into the final quarter Penrith looked to have the game in the bag, they were defending stoutly and Allinson pulled off a couple of turnovers to ease the situation but Carlisle did manage a second try, again from a lineout with a minute to go. It didn't look likely to change the final result of the game but it did give them a losing bonus point.
