SEVEN TRIES AND A BONUS POINT SEE PENRITH BACK IN 4TH PLACE

Penrith approached this game with a steely determination to end the season on a high after the disappointment of slipping two places in the league after their defeat the previous week at Wilmslow. In contrast Blackburn had had two bonus points win in the previous two weeks and hauled themselves out of the relegation zone and could relax, at least that's the way the game looked to pan out.

Penrith kicked off and began the game at breakneck speed and after 20 seconds had a penalty awarded head on to the posts after the visitors were penalised when faced with some heavy home tackling and rucking when trying to run the ball out of their own 22. Ryan Johnson and Harlan Corrie in particular knocked the Blackburn runners backwards all afternoon.

Matt Allinson's attempt came back off the post but the clearance kick instead of finding touch found Jon Fell and he ran the ball back and Penrith were soon on the visitors try line and they were again penalised, this time Allinson kicked to the corner for the attacking lineout. Johnson took the throw and Corrie peeled of the tail and bore down on the line. The defence managed to bring him down just short of the try line and the supporting forwards hit the ruck, the ball came to the base and Tama Toomata picked and went round the fringe and powered over from short range. Allinson added the conversion and the home side were away.

They added a second try after ten minutes, Allinson kicked a penalty to the visitor's 22 and Penrith won the lineout. James Hogg ran the ball up in midfield and set up the ruck in the centre of the pitch, Toomata again picked and went, drew in a couple of tacklers before slipping the ball out of the back of his hand to the supporting centre James Boustead who found himself in a surprising amount of space, he easily beat a pair of static defenders to make the line.

The home side looked as if they might run riot but they were having trouble at the set scrums early on and rather than play simple quick rugby rather over elaborated and Blackburn managed to stem the tide.

Approaching the half hour the home side got back on track, again the score came from an attacking lineout, this time the forwards drove the ensuing maul pulling in the cover before releasing the backs, they moved the ball quickly wide and Boustead under pressure got Kris Bratton away on the outside and once in behind the first line of defence at pace he was unstoppable. Allinson struck an excellent conversion from wide out and Penrith almost scored direct from the restart. Bratton was involved making the break at pace out of his own 22, he fed the supporting Mike Stephens some 30m out and he could not quite make the line, Dan Morgan, quickly up in support looked to have the line at his mercy as did 17 year old scrum half Alex Pantechis making his senior debut but a scrambling Blackburn defence just held out.

Penrith did score a fourth try before the break and the young scrum half played his part breaking from a ruck just outside the 22, there some nice interplay that ended up with a ruck on the line. Captain Toomata then arrived to take the pass down the short side and was not to be denied as he drove over in the corner.

Penrith turned round 26 points to the good and the feeling was if they continued to play rugby there could be a feast of tries in the second half as the visitors looked to be coping badly with the pace of the game. They had started off causing Penrith all sorts of problems at the scrummage and disrupting their ball but as the game went on the ascendancy was with the Penrith eight as their fitness told.

The avalanche of points did not come as Penrith played very little rugby in the third quarter as the game stagnated but they did put on a bit of a show in the final quarter. Replacement Jamie McNaughton on at centre for Bratton who had taken a knock showed a bit of pace at outside centre before putting Fell away down the right wing. He took his man on on the outside and took play into the 22 before being stopped and returning the ball to McNaughton. McNaughton was then aware enough to realise fullback Ryan Egerton was up in support in the centre of the field in acres of space and he chipped the ball expertly to him and all the fullback had to do was catch the ball and wander in to claim the try under the sticks.

They scored soon after with another sweeping move up the right, this time it was Boustead who glided through the gaps before prop Arran Sullivan was involved as he put Fell away. Fell again took play into the 22 where first Pantechis then Allinson kept the ball alive and then Allinson unselfishly set up Dowson for a simple run in.

Blackburn then got their reward for plugging away when they kicked a penalty to the corner and took the lineout and drove the maul over from close range to put points on the board. The final word was from Allinson in the final play of the game, Penrith were pressing the visitor's line but Blackburn were in possession and went to clear the ball upfield, Allinson went to attempt the charge down, which he did successfully, but not only that the ball stuck and he had a run in, to his delight, for his first Penrith try after moving from Upper Eden at the beginning of the season.

This week after the game on checking their phones the players found out they had regained their two places in the league table to claim 4th. Surprisingly Warrington had failed to pick up a bonus point and Vale of Lune had gone down at bottom of the league Widnes.
