PENRITH'S STRUGGLES AWAY FROM HOME CONTINUE

Penrith's poor away form continued as they lost at mid-table Bridlington by five tries to three, it was not an abject performance by any means but they were unable to play to the ground conditions and could not impose their strengths on the opposition.

Penrith would reckon to be a top of the ground team, they like to play open expansive rugby at pace but the conditions on Saturday were exactly the opposite to what they would want. There had been several inches of snow on the east coast and the half melted snowmen on the ground were testament to that, the snow had obviously melted on the pitch and although it looked in reasonable nick at the beginning of the game it resembled a quagmire at the end. That said a side looking to do well has to play on all surfaces and puddle in December is no big surprise.

With their recent problems away from home the visitors could of done with a decent start but they didn't get it. In the second play of the game they had a kick charged down and hacked into the 22, although scrambling fullback Ed Swale had managed to get to and smother the ball they conceded a srum deep in their own 22. The home pack won the scrum, the ball was moved to the stand off who cleverly squeezed a ball in behind the defending winger, rugby league style into the dead ball area, the on coming winger was first to the ball and the Yorkshire side were ahead.

The conversion was missed and Penrith looked to come back, had the ball been moved quickly to 17 year old winger Joe Connelly when the opportunity arose a try might have resulted but as it was the move was snuffed out in the corner. Play was brought back for an earlier infringement and Matt Allinson struck a penalty head on to the posts from 30m out to bring his side back to within two points.

The home side were having the best of things and spending long periods in possession, the Cumbrians, when they did get their hands on the ball either tried to pull off some wonder move, kicked it away badly or worse still got their kicks charged down. The home side definitely got the better of the kicking game as they slid another good kick in behind the onrushing defence for their winger to win the race to the ball in the dead ball area.

The home team then extended their lead to ten points when Penrith were penalised for being offside on their 22, as the visitors tried to force the game they went further behind as a carelessly thrown pass was intercepted and the try run in from halfway, this was converted from under the posts and Penrith trailed 20-3.

As the clock ticked on to 40 minutes and halftime Penrith were camped on the home line and putting the home side under all sorts of pressure, in their desperation the home side kept conceding penalties and as a period of play cannot finish with a penalty the clock kept ticking. Much to the anger of the home supporters in the tenth added minute the Winters Park men were awarded their fourth penalty in added time and a home prop yellow carded. They went for another catch and drive from the lineout and this time got the better of things and finally got over the line with Tom Lindsay claiming the try, Allinson hit the difficult conversion from wide out and his side had a glimmer of a chance trailing 20-10 at the break.

The visitors could have done with a flying start to the second half but it didn't happen, they went further behind when a clearance kick was charged down on their own line and although the ball seemed to spin about behind the Penrith try line for an age it was a home hand that got to it first. Penrith stuck to their task though and got the score back to within eight points with a second try from a driven maul from an attacking lineout with Lindsay again claiming the try.

Penrith were unable to impose themselves on the game for any length of time and the home side were having the lions share of territory and possession and again went further ahead this time with a well worked try under the posts. Going into the last ten minutes Penrith's free running backs who had been anything but free running finally put a fluid movement together, Allinson, Jay Rossi and Swale combined to put Brad Taylor in at the corner for a quality try, Allinson converted off the touchline and Penrith were again eight points adrift, another try in the dying minutes would earn a fourth try bonus point and a second for losing by less than a score.

Try as they might it didn't happen, conditions underfoot were deteriorating badly at this stage and as they tried to open out play from deeper and deeper a long range try looked less and less likely and the game finally petered out. Penrith now slip into fourth place and this week face Driffield at home who replace them in second spot after beating top of the table Morpeth at home.
