Penrith got their National Three North season back on track after two successive defeats when they won 28-12 at West Park St. Helens. West Park had lost all three league games going into this match and were behind straight from the kick-off, conceding a penalty for coming in from the side on their own 22. Steve Wood’ kick put Penrith ahead. The first quarter was a disjointed affair with both sides making plenty of mistakes, and the whistle going a lot to produce endless stoppages with the result there was no flow to the game. Penrith extended their lead on 20 minutes when they took a quick penalty on their own 10 metre line. Wood moved the ball wide to Mike Hawley who drew the last man and put away Adam Pate who outpaced the cover to score in the corner. West Park missed two penalties before they got on the score sheet. Penrith had trouble all afternoon with their first up tackling and it let them down again to let the home side in for a converted try which cut he gap to 8-7. A clean break from Hawley and a feed to Tom Armstrong got Penrith up to the West Park line where they won a five metre scrum. Mike Raine broke from number eight and when he looked to have been stopped dead in his tracks he got the pass away to Armstrong who powered over. Penrith went close to scoring in the first minute of the second half when a strong run by Pate took play up to the home line. They were rewarded shortly after when Wood put a penalty over from the 22 to make it 16-7. The Cumbrians continued to press and excellent pressure from Ryan Johnson forced a poor West Park clearance kick. From the line-out 10 metres out the Penrith forwards won the ball and drove the opposition pack back for hooker Callum Rutledge to score at the back of the maul. All the Penrith front row had a good day a they comfortably had the better of the scrums with Steve Dixon at tight head immense and James Thornton man of he match with his storming runs all over the field. But Penrith’s tackling let them down again allowing West Park to make ground up the middle and they scored from a scrum in the 22. Penrith almost sealed it when Gavin Cartmel took a Wood cross kick on the full and nearly made the corner, but captain Rob Dawson did seal it when he stole the ball at a West Park line-out close to their line and crossed unopposed. The Penrith dressing room was subdued after the game as the players were not happy with their performance. As they had travelled away, won and scored four tries for a bonus point they had done all that was asked of them, so to know they weren't happy and want to put things right is a good sign
