PENRITH 30 ROCHDALE 15 TRIESMIKE HAWLEYSTEVE WOOD + 2PENS + 2CONSSANDY KERRIDGETOM ARMSTRONG - Penrith have very strong wind at their backs in first half and game played almost entirely in Rochdale half. Penrith could make no real inroads but Wood opens scoring after 10 mins with pen from Rochdale 10m line (3-0 13 mins). No8 Mike Raine makes good ground breaking from scrum, ball is quickly recycled and spun wide to Mike Hawley who breaks two tackles to score great individual try wide out (8-0). Raine takes ball from base of 5m scrum and links with back row, Tom Armstrong off blind side wing drives ball in, quick ruck ball is fed to Wood who throws a dummy and goes in under the posts (+ con 15-0 - 28 mins). A sweeping back move sees Gav Cartmel in space who puts Joe Nattrass away who is stopped just short of the line, the ball is moved from the maul and half the Rochdale pack is offside among the home backs. An easy Wood pen (18-0). Rochdale comes back and spends time in Penrith 22, despite gale in their faces, they are dangerous running short balls close to the breakdown and their No8 forces his way over (18-5). On stroke of halftime a Wood pen goes wide, there is some scrappy play from 22 drop-out and Sandy Kerridge picks his way through unorganised Rochdale rearguard (23-5). Penrith turn round to face wind and although Rochdale have better of it territorially, they don't really threaten. They did add to their tally with a pen after 11 mins. After 22 mins of 2nd half Penrith sealed game by running a free kick and although they seemed to have lost any momentum Mike Raine found a gap and when he was stopped Tom Armstrong was on hand to finish strongly from 10 yards out (+ con 30-8). Rochdale did score a consolation try late on under the post after good forward drive but by then Penrith were sure of the win and a bonus pt for scoring 4 tries.
