After torrential overnight rain the game was played with very heavy conditions underfoot although the afternoon itself was kind with very little wind and rain to affect the match. Penrith again came to the conclusion these sticky conditions do not suit their style of rugby and as in the game at Birkenhead Park the previous week they were to lose out narrowly. They started well enough and had a shot at goal after only three minutes. It went just wide, from the 22 drop out Paul Newton fielded the kick, set up Ryan Johnson who rampaged down the middle. The ball was recycled, Steve Wood went left, set up James Ellar who hit the line at pace making a clean break and then put Phil Fell away on the overlap and he went over in the corner, Wood converted off the touch line for a 7-0 lead. It was then Chester's turn to dominate, they missed an easy penalty attempt before scoring a try, their forwards won a lineout on the home 22, drove the maul almost to the Penrith line before going blind and putting in a delicate chip which was chased and touched down. They were to score again on the half hour, Penrith won a lineout on their own 22 but then lost possession of the ball, Chester spun the ball and some poor tackling saw their centre get in behind the home defence and they worked the overlap to score in the corner to go ahead 10-7. As the half drew to a close Penrith came back at the visitors and won a couple of kickable penalties, Wood was successful with the second to level the scores and at the break their was nothing between the sides. Penrith had by far the better start to the second half and it was played almost exclusively in the Chester half, the conditions underfoot reduced the potency of the dangerous young Penrith backs but Wood did manage a penalty shot to ease the home side's noses in front. While they kept Chester penned in their own half there looked to be no danger but one moment of madness was to be their undoing. Wood angled a kick into the visitors 22, three Penrith chasers bore down on the full back and any one of them should have taken him out, they all missed him and he made ground and chipped ahead on the half way line, he was taken out ridiculously late and the penalty was given were the ball landed and kicked to the corner. From looking benign Chester upped their game and from the lineout drove over in the corner for a 15-13 advantage. Huff and puff as the might Penrith could not mount a serious assault on the visitors line as the game drew to a close, the conditions took all the pace out of the game and it spluttered to a disappointing conclusion.
