Colts win inaugural Sevens

Border City Sevens

After a three year gap the Carlisle Border City Sevens got into action again with a festival weekend of rugby. It started on Friday evening and for the first time with a Colts mini tournament. Penrith, Keswick, West Cumbria BaBas, and the hosts played in a round robin that Penrith went on to win. On Saturday the senior sides and ladies teams were the main event.

Carlisle 19 – 12 Keswick
Penrith 55 – 0 West Cumbria
Keswick 0 – 27 Penrith
Carlisle 64 – 0 West Cumbria
Keswick 45 – 5 West Cumbria
Carlisle 12 – 21 Penrith

Penrith with a compliment of just 8 players put in a fantastic all round performance, solid in defence along with good pace out wide. The first two games were played to nil with the toughest game saved till last against Carlisle.
We started well with an early score but Carlisle bounced back to lead two tries to one by the end of the first seven minutes.
The second half saw Penrith close down the hosts in possession with an excellent line defence. Aggressive early tackles didn’t allow them the time or width to bring in there speedy players out wide. Turn overs at the breakdown and better use of the ball resulted in two more tries for Penrith.
It was another fitting tribute to a great set of lads who put in a tremendous effort to lift the inaugural Colts Sevens Cup.
