Penrith turn to host Girls Festival with 3 matches against Cumbrian Teams

Penrith had a squad of 17 girls and with 2 of the more experienced players missing others had to step forward in terms of leadership and they did - helping an excellent performance on the day.
New players Amie Powell-Currie , Anna McDonagh exceeded expectations and showed they will be great assets to the squad.

The 1st match V Keswick resulted in a 4 try to 3 win mainly thanks player of the match Lily Thompson- Parry who scored all 4 tries and had 3 turnovers. It was a good even game for both sides.
The squads defence is improving including their individual tackling showing that practice at training pays off.
Keswick started well and strong defence was required from Amie, Katie Smith and Leila Robinson.
Strong runs from Charlotte Harnwell, Lelia, Anna and all action Aimee set the platform for Lily to score.
Special mention for a superb try saving tackle form Aimee.
Chloe Brown made a powerful run for Charlotte and Jess Graham to continue the attack but Keswick held them up well on the line.
Capt for the day Rebecca Newby helped start the 2nd half in a positive manner with a weaving run before good handling from Evie Lightburn and Scarlett Turnbull gave Lily her 2nd try.
Good defence then led to a loose ball and Lily picked up, and showed her pace to weave past 3 defenders to score before adding the 4th after good play from Summer Goodwin.

2nd Match v Netherhall/Cockermouth score 3-6
The joint Netherhall/Cockermouth team had some strong runners and generally out rucked the girls, 3 tries coming from ball lost at the tackle area near their line.
Penrith tries came from Evie Wallace, Lily and Rebecca.
Although 0-3 behind at half time they had a great start to 2nd half as full back Evie Wallace caught the kick and ran past 5 defenders on a 30m run to score. Good defence with fine tackles by Charlotte, Keira Robinson and Rebecca made the opposition work hard for their tries. In attack some fine runs by Lexie Clark and Jessica Branstone led to tries by Rebecca and Lily.

The 3rd match was against a strong Kendal/K Lonsdale squad - the girls played well and continued to improve despite the 2-8 scoreline.
the first try from Katie came after she linked well with Charlotte and Lily.
Despite conceding tries to some fine individual opposition runners the girls defended well, one good team defensive effort led to Katie collecting a loose ball to run well and score. Jess Graham kicked well in an attempt to achieve field position but the bigger opposition runners eventually broke through a tiring defence.
Although possession was often gained by fine tackling especially Chloe close to the line it was often turned back over at the next breakdown to concede tries. Rebecca made a fine individual run only to lose the ball as she was about to score.
