The previous week the squad were outnumbered and out gunned by the more experienced Keswick team. This week it was a fast even game lots of great tackles, individual running and some excellent team tries by both teams. As the confidence grows so does the physicality with some bumps and bruises - many thanks to Heather and Tina the Keswick physios for helping both teams - they had a busy day unfortunately.
Split into 4 x 12 min games at 13/14 a side across the 1st XV pitch with 3 player scrums Penrith were fast out of the blocks with tries by Bianca and Emilia through strong direct running. Keswick responded but further tries by Tallulah, Lily and Katie put Penrith ahead. Katies'powerful driving play frequently sucked in defenders to create space for others. Keswick again came back to finish 5-6 to Keswick.
Session 2 saw the defences improve with Penrith passion making up for a lack of technique with 3 or 4 tacklers committing to the ball carrier. Tries for Katie and Tallulah as Keswick won this session 4-2 with some lovely balanced running from their try scorers.
Session 3 finished 3-4.
With the maul becoming "messy" the laws were amended so immediate strip was only allowed to free up the ball and the game continued to be fast and open. Tries from Millie, Emilia and Bianca after a fine break by Lissee weren't quite enough to win the session but the ball was moved more and the alignment of attack and defence improved. A mention to Chelsea who was involved and made her first rugby tackles!
Session 4 was Millies' session although losing again by the one try Millie possibly the smallest player on the pitch continued her energetic display and her alertness to the loose ball so her breakaway for 2 tries. Katie added to her try tally and Chloe was rewarded for her improved performance by a try for a score of 5-6.
Both teams enjoyed a well earned meal in the clubhouse after the match.
Thanks to the large crowd who cheered on the girls , Paul Cleminson, and U15 players Amber Beaty and Leila Robinson for helping with the coaching and U15 player Jessica Hodgson for keeping score.
