An unknown quantity this week as the U15s travelled to Stockton with high hopes after last week's win.
A depleted squad due to late withdrawals and injuries meant several debuts but the team set about their task with a strong wind at their backs and an advantageous slope underfoot.
Early forward pressure gained penalties and following a successful lineout, multi phase forward play saw the opening score with prop Henry Bowman driving over from 5m under the posts allowing a settling conversion from Captain Joe Cox.
The conditions allowed excellent rugby to be played by both teams before a trademark run with ball in hand from 2nd row Herbie Birkbeck produced an excellent try out wide. Sustained pressure from Penrith resulting in penalties and with the wind, Cox was able to drill kicks deep into the Stockton 22. Strong forward possession produced gaps allowing scrum half Ted Domville to scamper through for Penriths 3rd.
Excellent contest at the breakdown continued to reap reward and penalised Stockton for holding on. A 5m Penrith lineout lacked precision and scrambled Stockton defence tried to run out but superb backline pressure allowed scavenging No 8 Jack Gibson the opportunity to rip the ball and score the 4th on the stroke of halftime 0-22.
The wind and slope was always going to provide the 16th man and so it proved as early attacks yielded reward with a Stockton try. The kick off allowed a big Stockton pack to run at Penrith and make plenty of yards before an isolated runner provided centre Ewan Gill to twist and jink through the line to score a superb 60m solo try. From that moment it was all Stockton, two quick tries and Conversions narrowing the score. Outstanding defence from tackling dynamo Gethin Innerdale led the Penrith pack who refound their drive and with ball in hand knuckled down to the task. A third unanswered Stockton try rattled the spectators but resolute defence and another turnover from prop Bowman secured allowed Captain Cox to take a quick tap beating the defence before kicking to touch for the referees whistle to finish 24-27.
An excellent win on the road.
