The game started well for the Penrith team and they even managed to take the lead through some outstanding play from the backs. Isaac Butterworth picked up the ball and motored on the outside of the defence to be within 10m of the try line, Jake Fabi was in support and rucked over allowing David King to pick up and beat the cover defence to open the scoring.
Wigton answered immediately and stretched their lead soon after with a second try as their big lads found their feet. Penrith continued to battle well with Callum Scobie-Youngs, Bobby Greenop and Michael Dunne leading the resistance in the forwards but the effort that had been required to keep hitting Wigton back was having an effect, as was the effort required to keep battling the cold and rain.
The second half saw Wigton run in a number of tries with the wind behind them but Penrith were never overly rattled and heads didn’t drop. Penrith then engineered the best rugby of the entire game with a great rumbling forwards move from a kick off lead by Luke Jones culminating in Dalton Frith feeding Kyle Glasson who ran in from 20m or more. Some pleasing tackling was on display from the likes of Matthew Rush, Harry Thompson, Connor McKenzie-Tomlinson and Nathan Tweddle that is clear evidence of the work going on to improve this area of the game for these players.
Although it was a heavy defeat in the end, the fact that Penrith kept their heads and worked hard as a team made the coaches and parents proud. With only a couple of games to go before this inaugural season ends the lads can be very proud of their progress as a unit.
