Penrith under 13s succumbed to a determined Keswick side in the sunshine at Winters Park but went down fighting.

A draw would have been a fair result and, if man of the match, Luke Jones, had managed to ground the ball at the death it would have turned out that way.

The first half initially proved a very tight affair with Penrith defending their line well with strong tackling from Dalton Frith, Matthew McDonald and Elliott Bulman. Keswick finally managed to break through from a 5m scrum leading to a pick and go from their impressive number 8. Not long after, Keswick repeated the feat, this time winning another 5m scrum against the head and went in 0-12 up at half time despite pressure on their line from a determined Penrith side now onto their stride.

Penrith started the second half where they left off and after sustained forward pressure Bobby Greenop, displaying the upper body strength he is becoming renowned for, powered over for an impressive try converted by Michael Dunne. Penrith had re-jigged their line up at half time and with Jake Fabi enjoying the space at full back and Harry Beatty controlling possession at fly half they managed to keep the pressure on Keswick. Penrith then managed to force the error and Kyle Glasson intercepted a pass to score under the posts levelling the scores at 12-12.

Keswick hit back immediately with another rampaging run from their number 8. However, then the moment of the match occurred when Luke ‘Jonesy’ Jones went on a rampaging run that saw him maraud through virtually the entire Keswick team to score a magnificent try that sent the watching supporters wild with appreciation. With captain Dalton Frith kicking the conversion Penrith had got their noses in front only to see Keswick bounce back and take advantage of some poor tackling from Penrith to make the score 19-24.

With impressive rugby on show from both sides fitness was proving to be a decisive factor as the ball was moved from flank to flank, with Will Smith and Warren Porter displaying good stamina for Penrith and David King jackling well for the ball at the breakdown and winning ball as a result.

Penrith then managed to make progress up the pitch and Jonesy once again forced his way over the line, supported well by Nathan Tweddle and Calum Scobie-Youngs, put couldn’t quite ground the ball. Keswick had held out for a fine win.

The teams will meet again in a few weeks in a return leg at Keswick and the parents fortunate enough to witness this game will be looking forward to this match with baited breath!
