Penrith had earlier played Fleetwood and Bowdon clubs narrowly losing each match 10:0 and 17:0 respectively but playing well.
During the play of game possibly the funniest event ever witnessed on a rugby field occurred with the flying Joe Connolly doing what he does best – picking the ball up from deep and outstripping the cover defence on the outside. A certain try in normal circumstances but on this occasion Joe seemed to be slowing, his stride shortening and the cover defence was catching him. Then it became clear to the puzzled crowd what the problem was – Joe’s shorts were falling down around his knees! So Joe was caught but managed to recycle the ball and the fittest man on the Penrith side by some distance, fly-half Jake Fabi, recovered the ball and went over for a try. Joe had earlier scored a typical galloping try and played superbly well tackling like a demon and really adding some spice to the Penrith attack.
Earlier in the game some superb play by the Penrith pack collectively and by Conor McKenzie-Tomlinson and Callum Scobie-Youngs in particular resulted in a try by Matthew McDonald who cleverly grounded the ball over his head. Matthew had a great tournament and is showing great progress after coming back from a broken arm earlier in the season.
The game saw a third unusual try this time by Kyle Glasson who somehow dribbled the ball around five defenders showing skills Penrith AFC might do well to take note of!
Another notable performance was that of Thomas Maund who was solid and showed real power in his rucking and mauling. Others who enjoyed a good day included Isaac Butterworth and Nathan Tweddle who are really developing their skills and all can look forward to good season next year if they keep working hard on their fitness.
All in all a great day for all and a great way of rounding off the first season as a squad.
