With a pleasant spring morning in Northumberland making a game possible for the first time for 5 weeks for Penrith, the coaches were relieved that the players could finally get a game but weren’t sure what to expect from them after such a long break. Th

Penrith were outstanding from the off with a team performance against a very accomplished side to be proud of. This was a genuinely impressive display that started well with Will Holme and Billy Wastell gaining ground from the off and a quick tap penalty from Jamie Fawcett caught the defence napping. Jamie fed the ball to Adam Parker who showed great speed and determination to go over in the corner (0-5).

Tynedale came back quickly after they managed to turn the ball over in midfield and shipped the ball to their impressively quick inside centre who sped away under the posts (7-5). Penrith came back at them and after some good rucking by flanker Sam King and nice handling by the backs Billy Wastell went over on the diagonal run in the corner (7-10). Some excellent rugby by both sides then followed with Penrith players Will Holme, Ollie Baty and Ryan Williamson showing well in the loose.

However it was Tynedale who scored next as their inside centre repeated the feat of breaking right down the middle (14-10). Then Penrith rucked and mauled their way up-field and Max Lancaster displayed a cool head after some powerful running to find the support, arriving in the form of Jamie Braithwaite, who went over to make the score 14-15 at half time to the visitors.

The second half was equally as entertaining but Penrith were finding their form now and Tynedale were shut out for the entire second half as a result. Some very good rugby was played by both teams and Tynedale exerted a period of pressure but fierce tackling and dogged determination by Penrith, especially Billy Wastell, Alex Verrall and George Wilson meant they were unable to break the Penrith defence. Jay Potter then demonstrated his burning pace combined with elusive running on the left wing and was impressively supported by Alex Verrall who went over for a try (14-20). They both very nearly repeated the feat a few minutes later but were brought down just short of the line this time. However Alex wasn’t to be denied and after some excellent play orchestrated by Aidan Young who had an impressive display at fly half and intelligent kicking from Nathan Fidler at full back he went on for his brace from short range (14-25).

The Penrith pack were dominant most of the match with Ryan Williamson at tight head stand out amongst a great all round performance. Sam King managed to round off a resounding win when he supported Jamie Fawcett well and scampered away down the blind-side to make the final score 14-30 to an impressive Penrith outfit.

Man of the Match as chosen by the opposition coaches – Ryan Williamson and Billy Wastell
