U/13's v Winnington Park (Touring team)

Penrith v Winnington Park

Penrith hosted a Manchester touring team on their way home following a hard week that started on Tuesday. Having played some tough games in Edinburgh, the Borders and the North East they sustained some nasty injuries and could only field 14 players. Penrith however were fielding 20 players. Two willing volunteers were happy to play half a game each for the opposition, Ross Ridley and Tom Sharkey.
Due to the inclement, “Baltic” weather conditions, the team warm up, and ultimately full time was cut short. Winnington Park kicked off and Penrith took the ball forwards. Rucking was scrappy and the ball was scooped up by the opposition, early contact saw some solid tackling on the half way line. Winnington Park kicked the ball over the top and was collected by Brodie Glendinning (No 15) he carried all the way onto the 22 metre line breaking tackles and showing good pace. The break down was supported by the pack with quick ball giving Ross Ridley (No 4) a sniff of the line. The eventual surge over and try was by Jack Wallace (No 8), 5 – 0. The re-start again saw a determined pack making their tackles and rucking well, pushing forwards over the half way. Winnington Park managed to strip the ball in contact, set the backs, then feed the ball out. Penrith’s defence were up and ready, Louie Johnson stepping up for a cheeky interception, good footwork and pace adding to the points tally, 0 – 10. Louie replicated on 15 minutes with another well timed run, and interception, try, 0 – 15, Ed Smith (No 12) adding the extras 0 – 17. With the half time looming Penrith took their foot off of the gas, missing tackles and poor rucking allowing the opposition to venture deep into our half. Their backs proving they had good hands taking the ball onto the right wing with support quick to the breakdown. Tom Sharkey taking the ball over the line for a well worked try, 5 – 17.
Penrith kicked off in the second half and drove forward. The re-start was scrappy with the pack slumping back into familiar territory, poor body angles and standing off in the rucks. With hardly a minute gone the opposition left wing injected his pace with a good try, 10 – 17. With 6 minutes gone Bryn Jeremiah (No 7) was in possession driving forwards breaking tackles and making a good 20 metres to crash over for a good individual try. 10 – 22. On 12 minutes a loose ball was scooped up by a very cold right wing, Joe Newby (No 14) From well inside his own half Joe had the belief and pace to take him all the way to the try line, 10 – 27, Ed adding the conversion, 10 - 29. On 15 minutes Joe Robinson (No 13) went on another solo effort from the half way. His pace taking him over the line with a Winnington Park “Ross Ridley” in hot pursuit, 10 – 34. With no realistic prospect of a come back by Winnington Park, the referee stopped the game on 22 minutes much to the relief of the parents and players.
A big thanks goes out to the referee who did a fantastic job kindly responding to a Facebook request, and to all the mad keen parents willing to risk frostbite….
