Penrith Under 13’s continue winning streak

For their visit to play against Penrith Under 13’s on Sunday 16 October Wigton were unfortunately only able to bring an understrength squad. As a result it was agreed that some of the Penrith squad would play for the visitors in rotation in a match consisting of 3 periods of 20 minutes each.

The Penrith team started strongly and kept their opponents pinned back in their own half for the opening exchanges. Wigton defended well and did well to prevent Penrith the opportunity to score until eventually the early pressure resulted in a try scored by Alex Pantechis. As the Penrith players settled into the game even more they showed determined running and quick passing and this resulted in a further try from Keegan Shaw. The first period ended with another Penrith try scored by Freddie Pritchard, which was converted by Alex Pantechis.

Even with a rotation of the squad and with new players coming onto the pitch the pattern of the game continued into the next period with Penrith dominance rewarded with a try from Nathan Hamilton, which was converted by David Whittle. Although they continued to battle well Wigton had to contend with playing with some unfamiliar faces in their team and Penrith were able to take advantage as David Whittle added a further two tries both of which he converted. Towards the end of the period the Penrith team went through several phases of play close to the Wigton try line before Myles Harrop was able to touch the ball down over the line.

The final third of the game saw further changes made to the Penrith team and despite not having the luxury of being able to rotate players from a big squad, Wigton defended well and limited the hosts to only one more try which was scored by Patrick Noutch.

Once again the whole squad contributed to this 48-0 result. All of the players defended well when it was required and although the ability of the Penrith team to score tries has been evident over the last few weeks it was good to see that they were also able to maintain the tackling through to the end of the game to prevent their opponents crossing the try line. In attack the team once again showed slick passing and strong running albeit against weakened opposition who did well to battle for the full game themselves.

The Penrith squad consisted of: Patrick Bennett, Lewis Birkbeck, Jake Borgogno, Thomas Broadhead, Greg Cameron, Adam Cutting, Jake Edmondson, Syd Ellwood, Alex Fawcett, Euan Gillespie, Thomas Graves, Nathan Hamilton, Myles Harrop, John Hartley, Harry Holme, Ellis Hook, Adam Howe, Jack Huddart, Matthew McFadden, Patrick Noutch, Alex Pantechis, Freddie Pritchard, Keegan Shaw, Joseph Tidmarsh, Liam Trevaskis, Fergus Vecqueray, Lewis Watt, David Whittle.
