Penrith Under 13’s fight back to take victory

On Sunday 6th November, a large Penrith under 13 squad of 28 players travelled the long distance to Millom for a double fixture against Furness and Millom.

First up the opposition was Furness, who started the game strongly and took advantage of the fact that Penrith were taking a while to get going after the long journey. The Furness side, containing some very big and powerful players, was by far the better team at the start and dominated the game for the first 20 minutes. During this time they managed to score 4 tries to lead by 20 points to nil but some changes were then made to the Penrith team and these substitutions immediately paid dividends as David Whittle got on the score sheet just before half time.

In the second half the Penrith team began to play much more effectively and responded to the threat posed by their opponents with more determined tackling and good passing. With the forwards winning more ball the backs were able to show some strong running and a further try by David Whittle and two more by Keegan Shaw brought the scores level. Penrith were now in the ascendancy with much more cohesive play and a try from Patrick Noutch saw them take the lead for the first time in the match. When it looked like Penrith were going to continue to extend their lead Furness hit back to even up the scores once again as the match approached the final minutes. Not to be denied after their tremendous efforts the Penrith players dug deep again and maintained the pressure on their opponents and the end result was another try by David Whittle which was converted by Patrick Noutch to make the final score 32-25 in favour of Penrith.

The Penrith team showed great resolve to come back from such a poor start against a team with some very strong runners and the Furness side provided a very tough challenge. The whole squad played a part in finally achieving a victory and all players need to be commended for battling through to the end of the game.

The Penrith squad consisted of: Patrick Bennett, Lewis Birkbeck, Jake Borgogno, Thomas Broadhead, Greg Cameron, Jake Edmondson, Syd Ellwood, Euan Gillespie, Thomas Graham, Thomas Graves, Nathan Hamilton, Myles Harrop, John Hartley, Harry Holme, Ellis Hook, Adam Howe, Jack Huddart, Matthew McFadden, Will Melling, Patrick Noutch, Freddie Pritchard, Kyle Ryder, Keegan Shaw, Joseph Tidmarsh, Liam Trevaskis, Fergus Vecqueray, Lewis Watt, David Whittle.
