Penrith Under 13’s do just enough to clinch victory

On Sunday 13 November a strong Upper Eden side were the visitors to Winters Park for a match against the Penrith under 13 team. On a bright day which was ideal for rugby the two sides both put in a tremendous effort to play out a tough and exciting match.

Upper Eden started the stronger and the early exchanges took place in the Penrith half. However, Penrith held firm with good defensive work and they eventually managed to put a good passing move together which saw David Whittle score for the home side. Upper Eden continued to apply good pressure, with their forwards winning a lot of the rucks, but the Penrith team battled well and it was not long before Keegan Shaw raced clear to score a try after another good set of passes amongst the backs. The conversion scored by Patrick Noutch gave the home side a good lead but Upper Eden did not give up and scored two tries to make the half time score 12-10 in favour of Penrith.

The second half continued with the Upper Eden team just edging the forwards battle but with the Penrith backs looking dangerous on the attack. It was the home team that struck first in the second half with David Whittle again getting on the end of some good passing, but almost immediately Upper Eden hit back to stay in touch. Determined work by the Penrith forwards, despite being on the back foot at times, enabled the backs to get the ball moving quickly along the back line and two further tries from David Whittle re-established a good lead for the hosts as the end of the game drew near. A lack of cohesion from the home team and a great effort from the visitors saw Upper Eden score two tries to bring themselves within two points of Penrith but with no time for either side to add to their points tally the game ended in a narrow 27-25 victory to Penrith.

Great endeavour from both teams for the full match resulted in an entertaining game enjoyed by all of the spectators. The Penrith team displayed some great handling and fast-flowing moves in attack, some strong tackling in defence, dealing well with the pressure placed upon them by the visitors, and although the forwards had a hard battle they never gave up and remained committed throughout the match. Each member of the large Penrith squad played their part in helping the team edge the victory.

The Penrith squad consisted of: Patrick Bennett, Lewis Birkbeck, Jake Borgogno, Thomas Broadhead, Adam Cutting, Ben Dixon, Jake Edmondson, Syd Ellwood, Euan Gillespie, Thomas Graham, Thomas Graves, Nathan Hamilton, Myles Harrop, Ellis Hook, Jack Huddart, Matthew McFadden, Will Melling, Patrick Noutch, Alex Pantechis, Freddie Pritchard, Kyle Ryder, Keegan Shaw, Joseph Tidmarsh, Lewis Watt, David Whittle.
